Abstract

초록 2 Objectives: This study aims to evaluate the prevalence of oral impact on life with oral health-related quality of life index, OIDP in elderly Korean. The frequency and severity of difficulties and related oral conditions were explored. Methods: The population was the citizens of Gangneung aged over 65 who registered at the day center. An oral examiner and interviewers were trained and calibrated in pilot study. Minor modification were made to the format and wording of questionnaires. The retest was implemented no later than 4 weeks of the main study. Finally 668 among 728 were finished the questionnaire and the response rate was 91.8%. The ethic approval of this research protocol was given from KNUDC IRB. Results: Sixty three percent of the participants answered that they had difficulties on their daily life from oral health. Problem with eating was the most frequent performance to be reported and the percentage of the people who had this experience was 47.8%. They had the difficulties on a regular basis rather than only for part of period. 40-70% of the people who had the problem answered that it happened nearly everyday or for more than 3 months. 25-45% of the difficulties on their daily life was moderate or severe and 10-30% of them was no or very minor effect. Loose ill fitting denture (28.6%) was the main reason causing the oral health impacts. Tooth loss (20.1%) and toothache (17.6%) were the next reasons of the difficulties. Conclusion: Gangnung citizen over 65 had difficulties on their daily life due to the oral health and most reason of oral impacts was loose ill fitting denture and tooth loss. It is strongly suggested to establish the oral health strategy to support them.
